Pimenta de Neyde
The pimenta de neyde chili is a natural hybrid of Capsicum chinense and annuum, which has been named after the woman who first discovered it, Neyde Hidalgo.
Purple colouring can be seen not just in the chillies themselves, but also in the foliage and flowers.
The most unusual thing about this plant is that the chillies are purple from the very beginning; the only sign that they are ripe is a slight reddish shimmer when put under a bright light and a slightly softer feel.
They have a very tangy flavour, which is slightly reminiscent of the habanero`s fruity zest.
The spicy heat takes a long time to kick in, increasing gradually as it does so.
They can be used to make (purple) sauces or for drying out, resulting in a dark powder, almost black in colour.
